Located on Canadian Armed Forces Bases and Wings local Military Family Resource Centres (MFRCs) are the hub of military communities. MFRCs provide programs and services that empower and encourage strong, independent individuals and families.
The model chosen for the delivery of military family services is one of family support and community development.
Each centre is a not-for-profit organization, managed by a volunteer board of directors, represented by a majority of military family members. Board members are elected by the community. They assess local needs, in order to avoid duplication of community services and resources, while determining priorities and providing leadership of the delivery of the national Military Family Services Program (MFSP).
MFRCs encourage and facilitate the participation of military families in every area of their operations – from program planning and delivery to organizational governance and leadership. Volunteering at your local centre is a great way to make a difference in your community and can lead to personal growth and development. The MFSP encourages the employment of qualified military spouses.
Donations to MFRCs can be initiated with Executive Directors on a local level.
IN THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE
Throughout the United States and Europe the Military Family Services Program is offered directly to OUTCAN Canadian military families by Military Family Services staff who are located in some of the major hubs where families are located. These staff members are all Non-Public Fund employees of Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services. The MFSP encourages the employment of qualified military spouses.
At MFS United States and MFS Europe the responsibility for governance of military family services is not vested with a board of directors as is the case for Military Family Resource Centres. In OUTCAN, advisory committees are established to ensure the community is adequately represented when decisions are made. They contribute to the planning, delivery and evaluation of services. The volunteer committees are made up of at least 51% civilian family members of full-time serving CAF members and supported by a Commanding Officer’s representative.
